The Universidad Antonio de Nebrija invites applications for a fully funded four-year Ph.D. studentship at the Nebrija Research Center in Cognition (Centro de Investigación Nebrija en Cognición, CINC). The position is based within the Faculty of Language and Education at the Arturo Soria Campus in Madrid.

This studentship is directly associated with the research project «Reading with noise and reading as noise: effects in deliberate and incidental reading (RENOISE)» (Project Code: PID2024-161331NB-I00), funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (Agencia Estatal de Investigación).

Principal Investigators: Dr. Jon Andoni Duñabeitia and Dr. Bernhard Angele

 Project Description

This project investigates the interplay between environmental noise (both auditory and visual) and the cognitive processes underlying reading. Current knowledge of reading stems mostly from controlled laboratory studies. This project aims to understand the complexities of real-world settings where reading often occurs amidst diverse distractions.

The project’s central hypothesis is that auditory and visual noise act as cognitive distractors that interfere with linguistic processing (from lexical access to semantic integration) by engaging executive control and working memory resources.

The successful candidate will develop their doctoral thesis within the framework of this project, contributing to one or more of its objectives. This will involve designing, programming, and running experiments using methods such as:

  • Lexical decision tasks
  • Eye-tracking (including gaze-contingent paradigms)
  • Virtual Reality (VR) environments
  • Comparative studies with different age groups

Requirements

Essential:

  • A completed Bachelor’s and Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Psychology, Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, or a related field by the start date.
  • A strong interest in the cognitive science of reading and language processing.
  • High proficiency in English (both written and spoken).
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Good organizational and communication skills.

Desirable:

  • Previous research experience in psycholinguistics or cognitive psychology.
  • Programming skills for experimental design (e.g., PsychoPy, Opensesame, Unity) and/or statistical analysis (e.g., R, Python).
  • Experience with experimental methods and equipment (e.g., eye-tracking, VR, EEG).
  • Proficiency in Spanish.

 Employment Conditions

  • Location: Based at the Universidad Antonio de Nebrija (Arturo Soria Campus, Madrid).
  • Contract: A full-time, four-year predoctoral contract.
  • Start Date: Tentatively scheduled for early 2026.
  • Benefits: The studentship includes funding for research stays at international laboratories and opportunities for limited teaching training.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should send the following documents (as a single PDF file, if possible) to the Principal Investigators (Prof. Jon Andoni Duñabeitia at jdunabeitia@nebrija.es and Dr. Bernhard Angele at bangele1@nebrija.es):

  1. Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  2. A brief statement of interest (max. 1 page) outlining your suitability for the position and research interests.
  3. Academic transcripts (Bachelor’s and Master’s).
  4. Names and contact details of one or two academic references.
