We are offering a fully funded four-year PhD position at the Research Group Color blindness and universal design (Faculty of Psychology, UCM, https://produccioncientifica.ucm.es/grupos/5410/detalle). The position is part of the national program “Ayudas para contratos predoctorales para la formación de doctores 2025” and is directly associated with the research project “Colour Vision Deficiencies: Diagnosis, Compensation Mechanisms and Perceptual Learning in children and adults” (PID2024-155495NA-I00, P.I. Leticia Álvaro).
The project investigates Colour Vision Deficiency (CVD) — a condition caused by genetic abnormalities in retinal photopigments — by addressing gaps in screening, diagnosis, and compensation mechanisms. It aims to (1) validate and adapt the ColourSpot screening test for adults, comparing its results with gold-standard diagnostic tools; (2) examine genetic and perceptual training factors that may enhance colour perception in individuals with CVD; and (3) study, for the first time, compensation mechanisms in children with CVD. By combining molecular genetics and perceptual training, the project seeks to uncover how both biological (“nature”) and experiential (“nurture”) factors shape colour perception, ultimately paving the way for improved diagnostic and intervention strategies for CVD across age groups.
Applicants should have a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Psychology or a related field. Good English skills are required.
The position has the possibility of converting the final year into a postdoctoral contract if the thesis is successfully completed within three years.
