Prediction under uncertainty in real life environments: The peculiar case of music
Abstract: According to the latest theories auditory perception and memory involve the constant prediction of future sound events by the brain, based on the continuous extraction of feature regularities from the environment. The neural hierarchical mechanisms for predictive processes in perception and memory are typically studied in relation to simple acoustic features or sound patterns inserted in highly certain contexts, identifying reliable prediction formation or error signals, e.g., the N100 or the mismatch negativity (MMN). In real life, though, individuals often face situations in which uncertainty prevails. In music, the sheer uncertainty of sounds and acoustic features is exploited for aesthetic purposes in specific compositional styles such as contemporary classical music. In a series of magnetoencephalography (MEG) and electroencephalography (EEG) studies, we introduced stimulation paradigms and analysis approaches (exploiting knowledge from Music Information Retrieval) that allowed us to identify prediction-error responses from highly uncertain (atonal) contexts and to extract prediction-related responses from real, continuous music. Moreover, with functional connectivity analyses in the source space we identified the emergence of cortico-hippocampal interactions during the formation of auditory memories for more predictable vs. less predictable patterns. Our results contribute to the understanding of the general brain mechanisms underlying auditory encoding and prediction in uncertain contexts.
